<DT><B>Biography, July 11th, 2005</B>

  <DT>Ferran Salleras was born in Barcelona in 1975. He received the B.Sc. degree in Physics from the University of Barcelona in 1998 and the M.Sc. degree in Theoretical Physics from Imperial College (University of London) in 1999.  From 2000 to 2004, he researched at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (Switzerland). He obtained the Ph.D. degree for the characterization of the static and the ultrafast dynamic properties of semiconductor lasers and amplifiers.

   <DT>From September 2005, he will join the Ultrafast Optical Logic Laboratory in the University of Electro-communications in Tokyo as a research associate. His responsibilities include the study of novel waveguide structures, the development of 3R all-optical gates and the generation of ultrahigh-frequency ultrashort pulses.

<DT><B>My research:</B>

   <DL>

   <DT><BR>

   <DT> The main topic of my research at EPFL was the study of the static and dynamic physical properties of Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOAs). We had two basic experimental setups:

<ul><br>

<li> <b>Ultrafast Cross Gain Modulation</b>: temporal resolution of about 150fs to study the gain recovery of amplifiers and lasers

<li> <b>Collection and Analysis of the Spontaneous Emission</b> to obtain information about the logitudinal carrier density and temperature distributions along the active layer of our devices

</ul><br>

<dt>A significant effort was devoted to the improvement of the most important characteristics of the amplifiers, namely saturation, noise figure and recovery time. We found that the injection of a high power laser beam at the transparency wavelength of the gain curve of the amplifier could enhance all the above mentioned characteristics without any additional drawback. We studied several sorts of amplifiers and lasers: Gain Clamped amplifiers (bulk and QW, DFB and DBRs), distributed electrodes amplifiers and standard amplifiers. Even a preliminary study of the relaxation oscillations in QD lasers was conducted.

<DT><B>About Barcelona:</B>

  <DT><BR>

  <DT><a href="http://www.bcn.es/english/ihome.htm">Barcelona</a> is the capital of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalonia">Catalonia</a> (north-east of Spain). One of the first things that may strike you: Catalan and Spanish are the two official languages of Catalonia.  We use them indistinctively; official panels should be in both languages. If you dig a little bit into the Catalan history, you'll learn that there was and there is some rivalry between Madrid and Barcelona. And that goes beyond football!!

Its rich cultural sites and exciting night life are well known all over the world. And its reputation is actually well deserved:

  <LI><a href="http://www.museupicasso.bcn.es/eng/index_eng.htm">Picasso museum</a>: paintings from his early work.

  <LI><a href="http://www.gaudi2002.bcn.es/">Gaudi Fundation</a>: Sagrada Familia, Parc Güell, la Pedrera and more! (links in English and Japanese). Make sure you don't miss the main Gaudi attractions. La Sagrada Familia, even though still under construction, is still an amazing sight.

  <li><a href="http://www.macba.es/controller.php?p_action=show_page&pagina_id=30&inst_id=385&lang=ENG&PHPSESSID=qd7rues9e19bvgpuqfvljrk1n4">Macba</a>: museum of contemporary art in the Rabal Quarter. The Quarter itself is worth a visit even though might not be 100% safe, mainly at night.

  <li>Montjuic and Tibidabo areas to get a nice panoramic view of the city and much more.In Montjuic you will find the <a href="http://www.mnac.es/"> Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya </a> and also the Olympic Stadium from the 1992 Olympic Games. .<a href="http://www.tibidabo.es/default_eng.asp"> The Tibidabo Amusement Park</a> to have fun riding  

  <li>Restaurants: food is definitely one of the best things in Barcelona. Just try to escape from the tourist traps close to them main tourist attractions, i.e. Ramblas, Sagrada Familia… A few personal tips:

	<ul>

	<li>Les Quinze Nits: at the Plaça Reial in the Gothic Quarter, reasonable prices and good food.

	<li>La Fonda: Escudellers street, good catalan cuisine also in the Gothic Quarter.

	<li>Els Fanals: Mediterranean cuisine in the Plaça Catalunya.

	<li>Go to the Barceloneta Quarter to have best fish in town and good typical paellas.

	</UL>

  </UL>

  <DT>Barcelona has a great variety of attractions, just get a good guide and enjoy it!!

<dt>And by the way, even though I was born in Barcelona, my hometown is really Vilanova i la Geltrú (45km south from Barcelona). It is a small quiet town, not really touristic and the perfect spot if you want to enjoy a very nice and clean beach without the stress of Barcelona.

<DT><B>About <a href="http://www.lausanne.ch/">Lausanne</a>:</B>

<DL>

<DT><BR>

<DT>I am personally in love with this city: nice, young and perfect-sized by the Leman Lake and overlooking the <a href="http://chdt.myswitzerland.com/en/welcome.cfm">Swiss Alps</a>. It's one of the five largest cities in Switzerland and has two universities: <a href="http://www.unil.ch/central/page2192_en.html">UNIL</a> and <a href="http://www.epfl.ch/Eindex.html">EPFL</a>, which assure a young and amusing atmosphere. Lausanne belongs to the Swiss French part of the country, but still most of the people speak English. German and Italian are the two other official languages of the country.  

Things to do and visit:

<li><a href="http://en.fondation-hermitage.ch/">Fondation de l'Hermitage</a>

<li>The Olympic museum and the <a href="http://www.olympic.org/uk/index_uk.asp">International Olympic Comity</a>

<li>Cathedral and St. François church: from the cathedral you'll have a nice view of the city, the lake and the Alps. It's a must!!

<li>Needless to say, a good cheese Fondue or Raclette is compulsory in Switzerland. For a traditional touch, you can go to Gruyere. If you stay in Lausanne, try Café de L'evêché or the Chalet Suisse.

<dt>Switzerland has many wonders, natural beauty and dramatic sceneries sticking out among them. You can start your daytrips from Lausanne or use it as a base for longer trips: Montreux (like Jazz?), Vevey (no one escapes Nestle), Evian (want some water?), <a href="http://www.zermatt.ch/index.e.html">Zermatt</a> for a dramatic sight of the Matterhorn (don't you miss it!) and <a href="http://www.grindelwald.com/index-uk.php"> Grindelwald</a> for the Eiger and the Jungfrau just to name a few famous spots.

If you like skiing or snowboarding, you won't be disappointed. Major ski resorts are only one hour away from the city. A very convenient snow and rail system brings you to the resorts by train. Among all these ski resorts, let me just name <a href="http://www.televerbier.ch/index.cfm?dsp_fla=home&lng=en"> Verbier</a>. Awesome slopes and amazing free-ride, just take a look at the pictures!

<dt>If you are interested in Nightlife in Lausanne, my personal favorites are Captain Cook and Great Escape, both irish-like kinds of bars. The captain Cook might not be the best bar in the world, but its staff is definitely one of the best I've ever seen.

My advice: if you are visiting Europe, don't miss Switzerland!!
