our laboratory, Tokyo, Japan, July 2004.
Ueno officially invited Dr. Mads Nielsen from the Research Center COM, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Lyngby, Denmark,
to our research laboratory for 6 weeks in the summertime, for developing experimental research collaborations between DTU Denmark and UEC Japan.
After its success in 2004, we invited Dr. Nielsen once again for 4 weeks next year 2005.
Post-graduate students Suzuki and Sakaguchi in our laboratory co-authored the two good academic journal papers after the 2004-2005 collborations.
(Later, he joined the System Device Research Laboratories, NEC Corporation, Ohtsu city, Japan,
and contributed a lot with Dr. Kouji Kudo and his co-workers for two and half years,
to their R&D of advanced semiconductor opto-electronics devices for use in leading-edge optical communication systems.)

Year 2005

Anaheim, California, USA, March 2005.
The Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) of this year was held in the Anaheim Convention Center,
sponsored by Optical Society of America (OSA).
In this year's OFC, the workshop 'All-optical wavelength conversion and signal processing for next generation network'
was organized and chaired by Dr. Bernd Sartorius (Heinrich Herz Institute, Berlin, Germany) and Prof. Juerg Leuthold (Karlsruhe Univ., Germany).
The very last topic in this workshop 'Outlook in 10-20 years' was panelled by Y. Ueno (Univ. Electro-Comm., Tokyo, Japan),
Dr. S.A. Hamilton (MIT Lincoln Laboratory, USA), and Dr. G. Theophilopoulos (Technical Univ. Athenes, Greece).

Anaheim, California, USA, March 2005.
Conventional-style, reception party (or, say, get-together party) of this year's OFC conference,
was held in the ball room of Hyatt Hotel next to the Anaheim Convention Center.

Anaheim, California, USA, March 2005.
Some separately from the official conference's workshops,
Ueno found Dr. Leuthold in the same hotel by accident, amongst very many hotels in the Disney area,
invited him to either of the two's guest rooms,
then we two enjoyed informal, relaxed, productive talks exchanging on-going research ideas
for a little while. This was a good talk. (Did he remember it?)

Boston, Massachusettes, USA, March 2005.
The strong contrast between the beatifully frozen river in Boston downtown
and the above-shown, no-sleeve sunchine, Disney-land Anaheim near Los Angeles, almost same week in 2005.
This Sunday in Boston, Ueno had a meeting with one of his private 20-year-old fiends,
Dr. Thomas Schneider presently in Boston University, long since more than 15 years ago,
and the two gentlemen enjoyed downtown walking.

Boston, Massachusettes, USA, March 2005.
One day on his way back from California to Tokyo,
Ueno stopped by Dr. Scott A. Hamilton in his MIT Lincoln Laboratory,
and Prof. Erich P. Ippen in his Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE),
Massachusettes Institute of Technology(MIT), Boston, Massachusettes.

The COBRA research center, TU/e, is located just behind this admin. building,
where Ueno stayed one week in 2007 and directly communicated with young researchers and students,
being hostetd by Prof. Harm Dorren, new scientific director of COBRA, TU/e.

Eindhoven, the Netherlands, Sept. 2007.
Dr. Ad Valster in Philips R&D center, Eindhoven, was one of the best competitor researchers
in the 1990's for Ueno and his colleague researchers in NEC R&D center when many of global research institutes,
both industry and university institutes including ETH, IBM, Titech, Sanyo, Toshiba, were developing the leading-edge red AlGaInP laser diodes
for use in the mankind-first DVD-video-memory systems.
One afternoon after 15-year-long time flied since the last meeting between Dr. Valster and Ueno in 1992,
Ueno "privately" caught him in his Eindhoven R&D office by phone via the Philips headquarter's call center in Amsterdam,
he showed up for Ueno with his dutch bicycle in the middle of his urgent tasks,
and we recovered our old friendship in the 30-minute coffee break in a public cafe in front of the railway station.

Beijing, P.R. China, September 2007.
one of the student sessions in the Second Triangle Forum,
between Beijing university of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT, Beijing, P.R. China),
International Communications University (ICU, Daejeon, Korea),
and University of Electro-Communications (UEC, Tokyo, Japan).

Dr. Salleras in our laboratory, Tokyo, Japan, Sept. 2005 through March 2008.
Ueno interviewed two applicants and decided to hire one of the two, Dr. Ferran Salleras Villa (the third gentleman from the left)
as a post-doctral researcher one year after his receiving his PhD degree from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH),
Laussanne, Switzerland, supervised by Prof. Benoit Deveaud.
Dr. Salleras arrived at our lab Sept. 2005 and worked mostly with Mr. Masanori Honma (second from left) through March 2008.
This memorial photo was taken on June 13, 2007, when his family travelled from their hometown Villa Nova near Barcellona, Spain to Tokyo.
Right after leaving our lab. in 2008, Dr. Salleras found a good job position in Zurich, Switzerland.

Antalya-Belek, Turkey, October 2009.
Ela Quality Resort, one of the most luxurious hotels in one of the best resort areas in Turkey,
was the location where the IEEE Photonics Society decided to hold its annual meeting of this year.

In a manner similar to previous years, more than seven meeting rooms in the "convention area"
of the hotel were fully reserved throughout the conference week for us, attendees.
Total number of this academic conference's attendees turned out to be 600-700, this year,
with respect to about 7,000 members who currently hold memberships of this Photonics Society.
Among these 7,000 members, 50% are from US, 23% are from Europe, and 26% are from Asia,
according to the latest accouncement done on Oct. 5, 2009
by Prof. John Marsh, president of this society.

Antalya-Belek, Turkey, October 2009.
One of frank, inter-national talks in a swimming terrace zone of the resort, one afternoon,
between Japan (professor from Univ. Electro-Comm., ie., Ueno) and China (students from Tsinghua Univ.),
about their respective research topics and furthermore their respective daily lives.
We talked long, because we had travelled much longer from Asia to Turkey.
"oooh, what a strong sun shine they have in turkish october...!"

in the Shenzhen Virtual University Park (SHiP), Shenzhen city, P.R. China,
organized by SHiP's Admin. Section Chief Mr. Xie Zhao Jie and Deputy Director Mr. Wang Jian Hua.
Because of the industrial developments of this area (next to Hong Kong city),
the population of Shenzhen city is presently estimated to be 15 millions, very surprisingly
while those of Beijing and Tokyo for example are 16 millions and 13 millions, respectively.

Tokyo, Japan, July 10, 2010.
Another more-than-ten-year-long friend visited Tokyo from Finland, who came with her two companies this time.
I, my wife, and one of my colleague professors welcame them, enjoyed city walks in Koishikawa Korakuen (built in 1629),
Iwasaki Yataro House (in 1896), Shinobazu Pond, and then dinner time in a night-view restaurant near JR Yurakucho Station.
We talked throughout this beautiful day from 1:00pm through 9:00pm indeed, and each of us learnt many... I believe.
